Description
Gentleman's highly impressive Smiths railway type pocket watch with beautiful gold dial in a very chunky 16 size frosted brass case which has a large locomotive to back cover. Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of - her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! Dial;- Impressive and distinctive, slightly textured gold dial in mint condition - absolutely no marks or fading. Signed clearly in bold black script; Smiths and signed in black arched script to base of sub dial; Made In Gt.Britain. Big black Roman numerals with black minute markers and bolder black 5 minute markers to chapter ring. Recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut, original black Louis X1V hands and black arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order. Original slightly domed crystal in amazingly clear and bright condition with just some very light and fine (absolutely micro) little surface scratches (showing under eyeglass only) commensurate with age. Case;- The highly polished and very chunky 16 size frosted brass case (5cm diameter / 6.3cm from top of bow to base, 1.8cm depth) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is 68.9 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no wear or indentations and just a few very light little overall surface scratches / tiny bit of patina commensurate with age and use in her 49 years service. The front bezel and back cover snap on and off correctly, closing tightly with a very reassuring click. Beautifully adorned around the bezel with a highly attractive flower, leaf and scroll work decoration. The back cover carries a large, slightly raised locomotive to centre which is thundering down the tracks with smoke billowing and if you look at the image closely the engine driver is looking out onto the scene from his cab. To the inside is the most wonderful 'fishscale' engine turning which sadly has one scratch - looks like someone once tested it to see if gold. The base of the case circumference is clearly stamped; Base Metal. Movement;- The stem wound and set full steel plate (mirror finish) pin-pallet movement is in clean and bright order and as mentioned above has just been fully checked by my highly experienced watch maker. Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched script; Made In Gt Britain Smiths Industries Limited No (0) Jewels Unadjusted and carries the date number; 75 (1975). Balance action is excellent in all positions and is keeping great time (lovely soothing tick) with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the push down action is very firm and true. Lovely original crisp big flat topped 'onion' crown. Good original large firm totally un-worn horseshoe shaped bow (looks to have never been carried on a watch chain). Box:- Complete with the original very dark navy (almost black) strong display/presentation box which carries gold banding around, fern green base (with cut out to securely place the watch) and ivory coloured satin to the internal lid (few little age marks present). This is stamped boldly in gold script; Smiths. Appraisal;- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Smiths Railway type timepiece which as mentioned earlier was much loved and proudly cared for by the original owner - will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered securely and safely packed.
