Description
A scarce, miniature antique pocket compass by Robert Brettell Bate, London c.1825. Miniature pocket compass having 1¼” hand-drawn paper dial showing the cardinals, intercardinals and false points, fleur de lys to indicate north, decorated centre with the maker’s details, “Bate, London.” Blued steel flat needle, marked "N" and "S" in gilt, suspended on a crown brass pivot. Flat glass contained within a brass bezel, held within a brass drum form case with push-fit lid. Comments: This is a rare and attractive compass from the early part of the 19th century, particularly unusual in its very small size, and from a very well-respected maker and retailer of scientific instruments. Although 200 years old, it is in very good working order. A lovely antique compass in above average condition. One for the collector.
