Description
Large antique tall French wall mirror made around 1890 probably. It has a moulded wooden frame with a thin layer of plaster, with the original painted wood effect finish. The top corners are rounded and the base is flat with small plinths each side. It's made to sit on the floor, or perhaps on a dado rail, where ceiling height allows! Condition is obviously very worn: structurally it's not too bad though there's no back board and we've put a couple of oak batons across the back to keep the frame sound and the (very heavy) mirror in place. Cosmetically there are lots of bumps and scrapes and chips to the frame, and some rather unceremonious screwholes. There would have been some sort of crest on top: that's gone and there are holes where it fixed on (see pics). That's not so bad as the look is a little more Louis Phillipe, from about 50 years earlier and not over fussy. The main thing though is the mirror silver. While it's mostly there and not too flaky except on a couple of edges, it is very speckled, or "foxed". It's like looking at yourself in a thick fog: quite flattering in some ways perhaps...
So it's not really a great looking glass but it's hugely evocative and speaks of tall Parisian apartments or rural chateaux. Sorry, bit poetic.
We have another one of these in the pipeline: essentially the same but a bit wider.
