Description
Please see my stock page for one of the largest selection of jewellery boxes available on this website.
Extremely attractive rosewood jewellery box in very good condition. Stands on the original wooden bun feet. Ornate and intricate inlaid Mother of Pearl inlays with white metal (often referred to as pewter) strips surrounding the inlays to the front and top of the box. All inlays are in superb condition, all original. One piece of replaced veneer beneath one of the hinges at the back, other than that all veneer is original and complete. Ball and dart edge moulding to the raised top panel, lid and base edges…again all original…all complete. The side brass hoop handles are replacements.
They would have originally been wooden hoops but not everything to do with antiques was practical and to have wooden hoops set within relatively flimsy brackets certainly was not a good ideal as is proven by the number that have failed to last!! The lid closes perfectly square. Original brass ‘stop’ hinges. Original lock, key for decorative purposes only. As impressive as the exterior is the interior if anything is more so. The panel to the lid interior is in exceptional condition and the ‘love letter’ envelope to the back can only be described as being in unused condition. It is rare to come across the likes with the thin material side folds still fully intact!!!! The base section comprises of 14 sections.
There is one lid missing but other than that, once again it is in remarkable condition. Please note the pewter beading to all upper edges of the tray and dividers and the condition of the material and paper lining. Original metal side handles to assist access to the storage space beneath the tray.
All lining throughout is original and in excellent condition. The box was original made to serve as a sewing/work box but the majority of boxes of the style are now put to modern day use as jewellery boxes, the small sections in the tray and the open storage space beneath making it ideal for the purpose. Obviously this box has been admired rather than used over the course of heading towards 200 years. Extremely attractive style in a condition certain to please, cannot fail to command attention in any setting………and a fine investment piece. Very Highly Recommended.
