Dining furniture as the name suggests includes the dining table, chairs, and sideboard, but can also include side tables and cabinets. As the dining experience took on new levels of complexity and popularity during the 18th and 19th Centuries so the accompanying furniture tended to be expensive, elegant and very well made. Mahogany remained the timber of choice followed by Oak, Walnut and other exotic timbers. These were very public pieces to be seen and admired so closely followed the changing fashions and tastes of the day. The idea of a fully matching dining suite did not really emerge until the end of the 19th Century and found favour during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 30s. This may have been a way for savvy salesmen to sell you more than you had intended, but it also allowed ordinary households to relax about how their dining room would look overall.
Today we have largely moved away from this formulaic approach and back to dining rooms where mismatched individuality is praised. We are happier to match a Regency Chiffonier with a late 19th Century Dining Table and then place 20th Century chairs around it. The look is entirely up to you!
