Sir Edward Musgrave, 1st Baronet of Nova Scotia, was a Royalist who maintained a regiment of horse at his personal expense during the English Civil War. In 1648 he served as a Colonel at the Battle of Preston. When the horse of Charles II was shot from under him in 1651, he dismounted and supplied the king with his own mount. After defeat, Sir Edward found refuge in Scotland with the Duke of Gordon, but wanted by Parliament he was discovered, and Cromwell informed the Duke that he would storm his castle if he was not given up. Musgrave escaped and fled to the Isle of Man.
