18th Century Engraving of a Swan by Mazell after Paillou

A very perky swan, beautifully observed by the celebrated painter, Peter Paillou (1720-90) and engraved by Peter Mazell for Thomas Pennant’s book “British Zoology in 1760s." Paillou was born in France but came to Britain early on and was employed by Thomas Pennant, a Welsh naturalist and writer, to paint birds for his publication “British Zoology” 1766-7, which had 132 plates. Peter Mazell made engravings of his paintings, of which this is one.
