18th Century Oak Childs Wainscot Chair

A fine and unusual 18th Century antique chair in itself, and exceptional in that it exhibits some wonderful period oak carving to the back panel. All beautifully executed in crisp high relief detail, the panel is decorated with stylized naturalistic designs - plants, leaves flowers, a sun burst, a rainbow and a heart. The date 1731 is also chisel carved into the panel. The chair is very well-built with bobbin turned legs and it has a framed inset panelled seat of pine.  It is a perfectly scaled down version of a wainscot armchair, the seat is 36cm high. I think it quite likely that this chair was built and carved as a gift of affection, to mark or commemorate something very special and personal - a betrothal perhaps or a childs birth.
