Crafted from walnut, a wood which was highly prized during the 18th century for its exceptional colour variation and grain patterns, this chest boasts two smaller drawers stacked above three larger ones, known as a 2-over-3 configuration, providing ample storage space.   The top of the chest and the three lower, larger drawers feature crossbanding and geometric motifs which involves applying an inlay of contrasting wood. The drawers feature crossbanding which frames the beautiful herringbone inlays which are made up by arranging pieces of veneer or inlay in a zigzag pattern, resembling the bones of a herring. The brass drop handles and escutcheons are of perfect proportion and design to add a touch of elegance and functionality to the piece. The design and scale of the drawers is exquisite and from the outer crossbanding which frames the intricate herringbone inlay to the inlay of the crisp geometric design inlays where used it is very clear that quality craftsmanship was employed throughout.   All the techniques involved throughout the cabinet work, veneering and the finishing of this piece are what makes this such a quality piece and have made it endure for well over two hundred years to still be in this wonderful untouched and unrestored condition.  It is fair to say that it does exhibit some blemishes on the polished surface and fair wear over time but this does not in any way detract from its form or function but rather enhances its place in history.  Please look at the photographs as these are a good representation of the condition in general. Overall, this walnut chest of drawers with its warm honey-coloured veneers and exquisite details exemplify the craftsmanship and sophistication of the Age of Walnut, a defining era in English furniture history which began during the early 18th century. It is truly a timeless treasure and its historical significance and craftsmanship make it a captivating addition to any collection. There have been no accidental choices in the design and execution of this wonderful piece of furniture.  It has been taken to another level through the use of the well thought out design and construction where visual and overall appeal was created and the aesthetics and functionality have been treated with equal importance.  Evidence of a creative mind is clear from the choice of veneers as the basis for the entire piece to the totally cohesive design features that build together of the outer carcass, top and drawers. The labour intensive involvement of arranging the veneers, crossbanding and inlays created attractive effects which added further visual interest and sophistication.
