Description
This is a superb antique Mandalay chest dating to the second half of the 19th century.
Made of solid wood it is a heavy and well made piece which was possibly used by a British army officer or government official or perhaps made and bestowed as a gift to a loved one during the colonial occupation of Burma.
The chest has a deep lid which opens to reveal a fitted interior with lidded compartments and a lift out section which removes to reveal a large inner storage area. The lid features glass panels which sit over decoupage flowers and decorative raised wooden rosettes surrounding a small mirror.
To either end of the chest is an aged black metal handle and the chest is decorated with brass inlays and the lettering M.D.Y Box.
The wood has a lovely wax polished finish and a good patina from years of use. The key has been lost somewhere in time.
