Description
Fine British art antique 19th Century Oil painting on canvas of Royal Mail Carriage Coach with Horses after James Pollard. Royal mail collectors interest! Subject a very interesting scene in the foreground of an old Royal Mail carriage coach being pulled by horses along a country road, with coachman wearing a smart red jacket driving holding the reins in one hand to 4 superb prestigious galloping equine horses. In his other a hand he is carrying a whip. A boy is seated next to him to his left. Behind are passengers smartly dressed important lady and gentleman all wearing hats. Inside the carriage is a lady wearing a fancy pink and white dress, with her hand outstretched and lowered pointing towards the children figures who are standing along the side of the road. At the back another gentleman in red uniform who is blowing a horn bugle. At the bottom is a dog running along with dust cloud rising coming from off the dirt road. In the background views of the countryside with rolling hills and a large stately home on the hill to the far right with birds in the sky above and deers below in the distance. The Royal mail crest and name can be seen on the carriage. The colours are vibrant and beautiful & having great perspective, a great conversation piece. Unsigned. In the style of after James Pollard (1792–1867) was a British painter noted for his mail coach, fox hunting and equine scenes.Pollard was born in Baynes Spa Fields (later renamed Exmouth Street) in Islington, the son of the painter and publisher Robert Pollard (1755–1838). Between 1821 and 1839, James Pollard exhibited at the Royal Academy. He exhibited at the British Institution in 1824 and 1844. During his career, he also worked with John Frederick Herring Sr. on several horse racing paintings in which he painted the backgrounds and spectators while Herring painted the horses. Such master fine brushstroke control. So finely painted oil on paper laid on canvas. Set in a rather ornate gilt frame with hanging thread on the back ready for home display. Offered in fine used condition. The painting surface has various craquelure, dirt, stains, scuffs, paint loss and some tears with foxing to the canvas back, the frame having various wear, scuffs, chips and losses in places and old repairs and over painting commensurate with usage & age.
