Welcome to chapmanpugh modern antiques. We sell antiques from the 17th to the 21st centuries that look good in modern and contemporary settings. We are particularly interested in pieces created by influential designers, manufacturers and furniture makers. We choose examples which we think are stylish and are interested in their place in history. We especially like antiques with a story attached. We also love the fact that by buying an antique piece of furniture, pottery, glass etc to use again, we are preserving our natural resources and preventing the environmental burden of another item being produced. This is why antiques are so wonderfully sustainable. New items are added on a regular basis. We ship to Europe, the United States and the Rest of the World.

Description
In General An unquestioned design classic, embracing both Pop Art of the 1970s and appearing on the cover of Vogue in 1995 with British model Kate Moss, we are offering a genuine pair of white Panton Chairs (originally known as Panton S Chairs) – both manufactured in September 2004 as is attested by the labels (pictured).  We have not been able to find any other pairs of Panton Chairs with the same dates on them.  We guarantee their originality as manufactured by Vitra – design number 813-083 – with the Vitra mark being on the back of each chair. The first design of chair to be made from one piece of plastic and without legs, the Panton Chair was originally conceived by the Basel based Danish designer Verner Panton in 1959.  Verner wanted to design a comfortable chair made in one piece that could be used anywhere. However, being initially extremely difficult to produce due to this one piece construction, it was not until 1963 that the challenge of constructing it was accepted by the prestigious Swiss company Vitra who developed it with Verner.  This took several years and there were several changes in construction to make it saleable (and indeed stable) – plastic at the time usually only being used for basic commercial purposes. The chair was first presented to the public in 1967 and was an instant hit.  It has received numerous international design awards and is represented in the collections of many prominent museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York, London's Design Museum, Berlin's German Historical Museum and Copenhagen's Danish Museum of Art & Design. Being both stackable and easy to clean as well as suitable for indoor, outdoor, dining room, bedroom and office/commercial use, the Panton's practicality and ability to fit perfectly into any surroundings makes it ideal for many forms of modern interior design.  As Vitra themselves state: “due to its expressive form, it has become an icon of the twentieth century”.  Its curved cantilevered shape and lack of back legs making it look more like a sculpture than a chair. It is also durable and made of 100% recyclable material. Colour is an important feature of Panton chairs.  Verner himself initially considered studying colour psychology as a student, but found it took too long to qualify.  Nevertheless, the classic colours for this range are red, white and/or black although other colours have been available throughout its life – both in Europe and in the USA where they were sold by Herman Miller (now MillerKnoll Inc.).  The white colouring can create a sense of calm and tranquility, neutrality, modernity and/or simplicity depending on how it is used. The chairs we are selling are early versions of the fourth series (the most up to date version) which was launched in 1999 and incorporated technical improvements in plastics processing.  It is designed to be used both inside and outside. Note: It is recommended not to leave these chairs out in sunlight for too long as even though made with special Uv-resistant additives that slow down the fading process caused by ultraviolet rays, exposure to the sun for an extended period of time can result in colour changes. As Marianne Panton (Verner Panton’s widow) said of some yellow Panton Chairs in 2018: “Last summer there were a large number of yellow Panton Chairs here on the Vitra Campus. They looked like animals in a meadow. As if they were alive!”  And we agree with her. At Chapman Pugh Modern Antiques, as our banner states, we are interested specifically in Great Designs by Great Designers.  And the Panton Chair is certainly Design with a capital D.  Iconic is not an overstatement.
