A fine oil on canvas landscape scene by Frank Gresley 1855-1936.
The work is most unusual for this artist as he was primarily a watercolourist. The painting depicts a view down a woodland path and will almost certainly be in Gresley’s native Derbyshire. The quality of the work is superb, particularly the representation of light and shade.
The Gresley family were a famous group of three generations of Derbyshire artists. Frank Gresley 1855-1936 was born and bred in Derby, the son of the artist James Gresley and father to the artists Cuthbert and Harold. Frank became a highly proficient landscape painter producing mainly views of Derbyshire and its villages. He exhibited mostly at The Nottingham Society of Artists and was a full member. The work is signed and titled ‘A Woodland Nook’ on the stretcher at the back and the frame also bears the artist’s name.
The original frame is wonderful quality in excellent condition and retains the original gilding. The whole is a great piece by this desirable and highly collected artist and has a wonderful period feel and decorative impact.
