Description
Superb 19th century Anglo-Chinese padouk secretaire chest, of two part campaign construction. This attractive chest has a deep fall front top drawer with a dark red baize writing surface, the recess is fitted with a central cupboard with secret compartments, flanked by pigeon holes each with a decorative shaped cornice, above three small drawers. Each of the four outer drawers has a fine inlay of lighter wood highlighting the edge and are fitted with two original inset bun handles. The chest is raised on four chunky reeded original feet giving it a feeling of status.

The top section of the chest retains its two original iron carrying to the side; the bottom section no longer has these handles. This chest is sturdy, boasting a beautiful rich hue, an attractive grain and an exceptional patina, making it a standout piece of period furniture that will offer both storage and a piece of history to any home.
As with all antique pieces, it bears marks of its history; for instance, there are historic cracks to the side, that have been thoughtfully filled.
