An English novelist and art critic, William Beckford (1760 - 1844) was the son of a former London Mayor - the significant inheritance upon his father's death afforded Beckford a lifestyle conducive to indulgence in art and architecture. A brief dalliance as a pupil of Mozart gave way to following the tutelage of Alexander Cozens (1717 - 1786), a British landscape artist. His most notable written work is Vathek - a gothic novel started in French and first published in English without Beckford's name in 1786. Other titles by Beckford include Italy - with Sketches of Spain and Portugal, and the satirical novel Azemia. Presented in good antique condition. Lightly time-worn and intact.
