Description
This is an antique gentleman's bureau. A fine English, walnut writing desk or secretaire, dating to the Georgian period, circa 1760.
Wonderful Georgian example, with a delightful visual appearance that displays a desirable aged patina and in good order throughout. Quality walnut stocks present fascinating grain interest. Basks in warm caramel hues across all surfaces with lighter stringing.
Classic bureau form, with a fall front over four graduated drawers. Brass escutcheons and drop handles in the classic shaped batwing form. Working lock to the fall front, the key turning effortlessly through the escutcheon. Front opens to reveal the fitted interior and skiver, supported by extending lopers.
Inset into the two-piece writing surface, a quality velvet skiver with shaped corners. Suite of small drawers to the gallery, alongside pigeon holes and a central door. Opening the door reveals a personalised note, dating to 1844 with working lock, key present. Pilasters either side of the door pull forth, to reveal concealed storage sleeves.
Escutcheons across all four drawers - main key present for drawers 2 & 3. Quality oak drawer boxes, intersecting the thick fascia with dovetail joints. Drawers of graduated height, the uppermost drawer of narrower profile. The whole raised upon shaped bracket feet, with a panelled finish to the rear.
This is a superb antique fall front bureau, with a complement of drawers and internal storage as an accompaniment to the inset writing skiver. Solid joints and construction, delivered ready for the home.
We offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee with all of our antiques.
