Condition This Victorian Piano Top Davenport. It is in superb condition with just a few small points to note. Fretwork gallery shows signs of being glued, writing slope has had a sympathetic repair. Lock is missing from top draw. Small shrinkage crack in piano top. no key. Description A superb and less common Piano Top Davenport. Complete with secret pop up gallery, writing slope, mahogany lined drawers to top and sides. Circa 1860 This Victorian burr walnut pop-up Davenport desk was known as Harlequin desks but also pop-up desks as on a release of a button the stationary cabinet automatically pops-up. This high-end example has the must have features of the carved cabriole legs to the front and the ‘piano top’ lid that covers the sliding writing surface. It is also made in the best burr walnut, rather than a figured cheaper walnut. Having the usual set of drawers to the right-hand side and the dummy drawers to the left, all with the original knob handles. The piano lid opens on a hinge that reveals the sliding writing surface with its adjustable reading slope and a further storage compartment two ink wells and interior drawers.
