Description
This is a most exquisite piece of William IV Scottish silver in the form of a wee Quaich. The Quaich is circular, with twin fox mask handles at either side (These handles are traditionally known as lugs in Scots...Lugs being ears!). The bowl has been gilded to interior, and retains this original feature. The outer edge of the bowl has been worked in repoussé with game birds likely Grouse, in a naturalistic landscape setting. This work is incredible fine and exudes quality and craftsmanship. There is also a vacant cartouche each side, which is a bonus, so that you could, if wished, have your own engraving. The bowl of the Quaich is raised on a shallow spreading circular foot. Marks: double struck by Ja (possibly J Asherheim) and Elder & Co, Edinburgh, 1832, Scottish thistle and duty mark for William IV. The quaich is actually a traditional Scottish drinking vessel, and its name derives form Gaelic cuach simply meaning 'cup'. Most usually reserved for a wee dram of whisky and presented as a sign of friendship and trust. Although the origins are steeped in lore and legend today they are widely used by those of Scottish heritage during significant life events, such as to mark the celebration of a marriage. Measurements from the the widest point including handles. Bowl itself is 6.5cm.
