This is a large and absolutely stunning, extremely impressive antique Swedish Gustavian gilt wood mirror. This was recently imported from Sweden, we would date it to around the 1820-1840 period.
The quality is outstanding, this is a rare and very beautiful design. Unusually, it is made from a combination of solid wood and papier mâché, with exquisite designs and motifs throughout. It is a great size and has a slightly overhanging top section.
We have had the frame restored by our master gilder, it is in great condition with a gorgeous all round patina. The glass appears to be original, there is some minor spotting to the silvered backing on some edges. The small borders of glass around the edges have a few cracks around the edges, part and parcel of a historic piece like this. It would be extremely difficult to replace them and in any case not worth doing, as the colour of the glass would be different to the other sections. This just adds to the charm of the piece we feel, the large centre section of glass is free from any cracks, so the function is unaffected.
