Description
Antique Victorian quality mahogany freestanding slide top Davenport by Charles Hindley and Sons, Oxford Street, London having a quality sliding and twist top with a green leather writing surface opening to reveal a fitted interior with drawers and storage compartment, pull out pen tray to the side above four mahogany cockbeeded drawers with original turned mahogany knobs, freestanding polished panel back standing on a plinth base
A fabulous example crafted by top London furniture makers C Hindley and Sons (1820 -1892) who took over renowned cabinet makers Henry Miles and John Edwards in 1844 who also made fine furniture for important customers including the Empress of Russia and the British Ambassador in Paris. Their high quality cabinet makers flourished, earning them a Royal Appointment, and a part in the Great Exhibition. Both companies are listed in the Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840 by the Furniture History Society. Over the years they produced some outstanding pieces of antique furniture.
