Description
Rare Archibald Carne (1879-1968) Arts & Crafts wrought iron (steel) companion set comprising of 4 fire tools poker, shovel, tongs, brush and stand. Marked A.Carne Truro, To the stand and most of the tools. The brush still has its original bristle head as fitted by Carne. Beautifully made and designed by one of Britain's finest wrought iron metalworkers of the 20th century arts & crafts movement. A similar companion set can be seen in a photograph of his stand at a Red Rose Guild Exhibition in Manchester c1937 and illustrated in Cornish art metalware by Colin Pill. Archibald Carne was known as The Smith of Truro, and exhibited widely in Britain as well as Europe and the U.S.A. As well as being chosen for the New York World Fair in 1938 his work also found it’s way in to the influential Swedish Design store Svenskt Tenn. He won many awards for his work and had several large commissions, notably gates for Truro Cathedral. Recently polished and looking superb, you can still see the hammer marks from production on the back of the shovel. For more information on Archibald Carne see pages 86-96, in Colin Pill’s - Superb book on “Cornish metalware”. A fine totally useable set
