Description
This is a very handsome Arts & Crafts (c.1900) fire screen that is by renowned Arts & Crafts designers and makers, Shapland & Petter of Barnstaple, Devon.
The screen has a striking central copper plaque with floral repoussé work in the art nouveau style, probably poppy heads, which sits within a mahogany structure. The reverse of the copper being behind a mahogany panel. Typical Shapland and Petter features include the heart shape piercings, and the application of repoussé copper panels, inspired by the fluid shapes of plants and flowers. In addition, the factory or pattern numbers are clearly marked on the underside.
A superb example of the craftsmanship and style of arts and crafts movement, which will look splendid in any sitting room, adorning the fireplace or as a purely decorative item elsewhere in the home.

condition
condition
The screen is in excellent antique condition. There are no dents etc on the copper panel and the wood has a lovely patina. There is a small blemish to the top left as seen in the photos where a small patch of wood is lighter in colour.
