Description
Attributed to Charles Sillem Lidderdale (British 1831-1895), portrait of a lady wearing a green velvet hat and lace collar. Oil on canvas. Set in an Arts & Crafts frame. Measurements: Sight (visible painting): Height: 60cm (23.6in). Width: 49.5cm (19.5in) Frame: Height: 74cm (29.1in). Width: 63.5cm (25in) Condition: Good. Not relined. There is a small patch verso at upper right. When examined under ultraviolet light, some retouching around the brim of her hat, hair, and collar is visible. Visible stretcher marks. Light craquelure. The frame has some scuffs and evidence of retouching and could be improved. Notes: There is a stencil for artists' suppliers George Rowney & Co on the reverse of the canvas with addresses 52 Rathbone Place and 29 Oxford St. They were trading from the Rathbone Place address from 1854 to 1884, and the Oxford St address from 1862 to 1881. (Source: National Portrait Gallery, British artists' suppliers, 1650-1950) Biography: Charles Sillem Lidderdale was born on the 28th September 1831 in St Petersburg, Russia. His father was a British merchant banker and his mother was a British subject born in Russia. They left Russia in 1843 and moved to London. Lidderdale enrolled at the Royal Academy School in 1849 and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1856, the British Institute from 1851, and the Royal Society of British Artists from 1861. He died in 1895. His diaries and notebooks are in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in their National Art Library and his works are represented in the collections of the Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Herbert Art Gallery, Laing Art Gallery, National Museum Cardiff, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Sheffield Museum, Shipley Art Gallery and Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
