Description
We present for consideration, this well-proportioned and highly impressive French Boulle striking mantel clock of Louis XV style, by master clockmaker, Charles Hour of Paris.
• Shaped ebonised case with cabriole brass feet.
• Case enriched with red tortoiseshell and gilt Boulle inlay of Arabesque form.
• Other garniture, includes finely engraved Rococo design ormolu scrollwork, a masked sun, and a winged Cherub playing a musical instrument at its apex.
• Glazed frontal aperture in a gilt frame mount.
• Sculptured gilt cast dial has blue hand-painted Roman numerals, (each numeral being set into a white enamelled cartouche) and original blued hands of bespoke design.
• Convex glaze with bevelled edge, mounted in a hinged embossed brass bezel.
• Fretted brass rear hinged door. High-quality French 8-day pendulum driven circular movement with outside count wheel to regulate striking mechanism. (The movement strikes the hours and half-hours on its nickel ‘ting bell’).
• Backplate stamped with the Charles Hour trade marks and serial numbers.
• Original brass sunburst masked pendulum, (having the same serial number as the movement).
Hour was a well-respected French horologist who founded the "Just" clockmaking brand in c1875, utilising the ‘Just’ name encased within a circle as his trademark which was stamped into their clock movement backplates. Hour’s earliest clocks also had “C.H. Paris” stamped into the backplates and both can be seen on the backplate of this exceptional clock.
