Description
A vintage striking mantel clock, by British maker ‘Smiths Clocks & Watches Ltd’, one of the UK’s most successful 20th Century clockmakers. (This fine example would have been assembled in Glanrhyd, South Wales, by the Anglo-Celtic Watch Company [a subsidiary of Smiths], known locally and affectionately as the 'tick-tock factory'!)
This model is called the 'Tompion' (as indicated on the base of the clock).
• Walnut case with lovely, aged patination.
• Hinged and glazed front door.
• Domed pagoda apex and shaped brass carrying handle.
• white enamelled chapter ring, surrounded by 4 x brass maiden head spandrels.
• Matted brass centre with original black Louis XIV style hands.
• Hinged rear door.
• Smith’s front winding 8-day F7B, ('F7, Variant B'), pendulum driven movement, with two-train striking mechanism.
• Lacquered and line-dotted backplate, with Smith’s logo and serial number '5712'. (Meaning “Dec 1957”, when the clock was built!).
• Original mat black coloured Smith pendulum bob, made of brass casing filled with lead and its original Smith signed steel winding key.
A fine, collectable, and eye-catching, English vintage bracket clock.
