Description
A fine English vintage bracket clock by Smiths Astral, c1930’s.
• Walnut case with lovely, aged patination and hinged and glazed front door.
• Domed pagoda apex and shaped brass carrying handle.
• White enamelled chapter ring dial with matted brass centre surrounded by four brass maiden head spandrels.
• Original black Louis XIV style hands with threaded collet.
• Hinged rear door.
• Fabulous front winding 8-day Astral movement numbered “123”, driven by a 7-jewelled-lever platform escapement. (The escapement being stamped with the Abec trademark [All British Escapement Company Ltd], formed by Smiths in 1929).
• Grained and unpolished plates, the backplate being stamped with the famous 'Astral, Coventry', trade mark.
From 1910, Astral was an original trading name of clock and watch maker Henry Williamson Ltd of London and Coventry, which following a merger with London based makers Grimshaw, Baxter and J.J Elliott Ltd in Oct 1921, became part of the 'English Clock and Watch Manufacturers Ltd' (Ecwm) portfolio of trade names. However, in 1932, Ecwm was purchased by Smiths English Clocks Ltd of London, who continued to use the Astral trademark to manufacture clocks until 1955.
