Description
An outstanding c1937 English striking bracket clock by the Garrard Engineering and Manufacturing Co. Ltd and assembled by their subsidiary company Garrard Clocks Ltd in Swindon. (Garrard launched their first clocks in October 1931, and become one of England's premium quality vintage clock makers).
• Honey-coloured Walnut case (with lovely graining and aged patination), hand-crafted by world-famous furniture makers 'Gordon Russell Ltd' of Evesham, one of Garrard's suppliers.
• Hinged and glazed front door.
• Hinged wooden rear door.
• Bell-top pagoda and shaped brass carrying handle.
• Chrome chapter ring dial with black hand-painted Roman numerals, surrounded by four brass maiden head spandrels.
• Matted brass centre, with an original pair of black Louis XIV style hands.
• Front-winding 14-day pendulum driven, two-train mechanism, set between two lacquered, snailed finished plates. (The backplate with serial no. "S34642", helping to date the clock, and stamped with the "Garrard, Swindon" trade mark).
• Original and adjustable spring-loaded chrome-plated signed pendulum bob and original chrome-plated Garrard signed winding key.
• The backplate bears the clocks serial no. "S34642" (helping to date the clock) and is stamped with the trademark, "Garrard, Swindon."
(Nb: The clock also has two movement Patent numbers stamped into backplate, both applied for in 1931. (A) The first in May 1931 (No. '378,897'), was for “Improvements in Pendulums for Clocks and Other Like Devices” and granted on 15 August 1932. (B) The second in June 1931 (No. '379,402'), was for “Improvements in Escapement Mechanism of Clocks and the Like” and granted on 1 Sept 1932).
