Carved Antique Black Forest Table in style of Matthew & Willem Horrix

This is an unusual carved Black Forest table which dates to the latter half of the 19th Century. The table was found in a rural country manor house in South Devon, the property of a collector of antiquarian books who had many unusual and wonderful pieces. The base of the table, with its single tall column, is heavily carved in the style of the Horrix brothers, please see the reference below from the website 1st Dibs. The Horrix brothers were the grandsons of Mathijs Horrix, the most successful cabinet maker in the Netherlands in the 18th century, specializing in Dutch furniture. "In the second half of the 19th century the Hoxrrix workshop was particularly known for the production of furniture in then highly fashionable ‘Historicist’ or ‘Eclectic’ style, inspired by (combinations of) historic styles and periods. Their workshop also specialised in the typical ‘Rustic’ of ‘Black Forest’ style furniture, which was very popular in the Low Countries, Germany and England to decorate Hunting Lodges or the Gentlemen- or Smoking rooms of upper class houses." The naturalistic carved tree column is superbly detailed and has a lizard and snail on the base and a large beetle further up, the workmanship and quality of the carving is highly skilled. The top with a simple Dutch country scene is almost certainly a later marriage.
