Description
Celeste Sophie Antoinette Breton (née Colon) (French 1787-1878) A Paris porcelain plaque, painted between 1816 and 1836, signed lower right “Celeste Breton née Colen d'apres Grimaud” presumably, this refers to Jean Alexis Grimoud (c.1678-1733) a.k.a. Alexis Grimoult or Alexis Grimout. However, although the painting is certainly in the style of Grimoud, and perhaps a self-portrait, we were unable to find where the original is presently located. We did find another representation of the painting, in watercolour on ivory, by M.C. De Burman (French C18th).
This plaque is particularly notable for being inscribed verso “Céleste Breton élève de Mme. m v Jaquotot”. Mme. Marie-Victoire Jaquotot (1772-1855) was a notable Sèvres factory painter, renowned for having painted the “Tea Service of Famous Women” (“cabaret des femmes célèbres”) in 1811-12, which is presently in the collection of The Clark Art Institute in Massachusetts, USA. She was awarded the title “Premiere peintre sur porcelain du Roi” in 1816, and between then and 1836, she ran an academy at her workshop at which the inscription places Céleste Breton.
In her monograph of Marie-Victoire Jaquotot, Anne Lajoix lists Céleste Sophie Antoinette Breton as one of Jaquotot’s finest pupils.
There are auction records of other works by Celeste Breton that have realised prices of $1,357 Usd and $3,989 Usd.
Celeste Breton was mother to Ernest Breton (1812-1875) a noted French artist and archaeologist.
