Description
A caddy for the keen collector. Classic Georgian style tea caddy. Typical dimensions, typical contrasting edge trim to the exterior and interior lipping complemented by the contrasting edging to the lids of the twin storage canisters and the aperture for the central bowl. The escutcheon has been replaced and probably would have ivory or bone originally. Hinges and lock in good condition. Replacement key a tad fiddly but I always recommend not using keys as it is difficult to ascertain the condition of the lock spring. Both canisters are in very good condition with the original hinges and remains of the original foil lining. The bowl to the centre is obviously a replacement but sits quite well in the recess. Leather lining to the lid interior in excellent condition…possibly too good to be original? ( though the correct colour and appearance). It is however the specie of veneer to the caddy exterior that sets this caddy apart from most of the same period/style. Veneered with Partridge Wood, a veneer rarely used beyond the Georgian period and possessing a grain unlike nigh on all other wood species. I understand that in Australia the wood is called ‘Beef wood’…..possibly more appropriately named as the wood does resemble beef.
A true classic caddy that would sit well in any collection.
