Description
Decorative 19th Century Silver Gilt Italian Console Table with Shaped Marble Top
Italian circa 1880
Of sumptuous rococo form, this fine console table centres on an cartouche, surrounded by scroll carving. The combination of foliate detailing and fretted areas is highly attractive, as is the wonderfully playful "cloud-shaped" marble top which is original to the piece.
The top has a beautifully carved moulded edge and is a combination of mottled pink, brown and cream which works beautifully with silvered gilt base which along with the design suggests this console to be of an Italian origin.
The four legs on the table are joined together by an asymmetrical stretcher, echoing elements of the frieze above, and this is further evidence of the careful consideration that was applied to every aspect of the design and construction of this table. A highly interesting and unusual piece of furniture.
