Title “Disaster Struck In 1875 Barque General Wolsley Wrecked Brier Island Crew Rescue” By H Bunsey
Your focus is first drawn to the centre where you can see the cargo ship General Wolsely in side profile being bashed and crashing against the rocks in distress, & sinking by the bow, having 3 masts & it is partially submerged with heavy white sea wash & spray with rolling seas crashing onto the deck of the ship. The sails have been folded away. Rigging is blowing fiercly with the high winds, onboard are the crew huddled together on deck awaiting rescue, rescue lines have been secured from a rescue party who are onshore pulling away at the lines and they have procurred a bosun's type chair to carry the surving crew one by one across to safety onshore. Above dark storm clouds sky all around, with large waves approaching on the left & central flanks.
The disaster occurred on the shores of Brier Island in 1875 Victorian era. On August 19th of that year on the ledge of Gull Rock. Gull Rock is a rock ledge that continues in to the mainland of Brier Island. Also around halfway in from Gull Rocks is another group of rocks named Green Island. The rock ledge which connects Gull Rock with Green Island to the mainland of Brier Island. Is located just below the surface at high water which is named Gull Rock Ledge. It is a very dangerous area & so many ship are lost in this location.
The barque 3 masted sailing ship General Wolsley was on her second trip from Liverpool, United Kingdom sailing to Saint John, New Brunswick in Canada. The ship ran aground off Gull Rock Ledge during a thick fog & became wrecked.
