Description
Offered for sale is a handsome, early 20th century, lustre glaze, German beer stein. It features a Tyrolean couple in colourful dress. They are in a woodland scene framed oak leaves and acorns. The woman has a bowl of fruit under her arm and there are images of game such as ducks and rabbits. The handle is fashioned as a grape vine. The base is also decorated with a border of a grape vine and it stands on scalloped feet. All this decoration suggests a harvest celebration. The form of the handle would suggest that it possibly the work of the Girmscheid factory. It is signed on the bottom which looks like an entwined G and S. The bottom is also stamped "Foreign" which dates it as between 1893 and 1923. In 1893 the Usa , being a rising power ,passed a law that all imported items must be marked by the country of origin having until 1923 for complete marks. In the meantime countries like England and France just marked their pieces with "England" instead of "Made in England", which was required in 1923. Other countries simply marked their goods "foreign" between 1893 and 1923 meaning it was their export product, going outside their own country.
