Description
Antique cast iron early gas fire with ceramic fake coals. According to the registry mark on the back, this was made on 31st August 1883 (not sure what time..sorry). Looks to be enamelled but has been refinished with traditional black grate graphite polish. That can be removed but I don't know what state the enamel is in underneath: probably rather chipped though that might be nice anyway. Nice floral design with leaves on the front panel. Around a dozen original fake coals in the grate basket; they are loose and can be taken out or moved about. It's embossed on the back as the "Hong Kong" model. Note that the innards protrude about 2cm further back than the front part; it's designed to sit in a hole in the wall.
Maybe you could use it as a real fire but seek advice first! Cosmetically it has various dings and chips, as mentioned above, probably to the enamel, mostly. There's a crack running through the fire brick at the back of the grate (see pics).

condition
condition
Condition is pretty good for the age: it's structurally sound, though plainly this item is sold for decorative purposes only; even 10 year old gas fires are generally not legally useable.
