Edward Sharland (1884-1967): Coloured Etching. Chartres Cathedral

A fine etching of Chartres, near Paris in France, featuring the famous Cathedral. The picture is full of fascinating detail of medieval buildings, the bridge and river. The etching has been touched with blue colour which seems to tie the sky and river together and provides depth adn shadow to some of the buildings. Edward Sharland was a prolific painted and etcher, mainly of architectural subjects. in Britain and Europe. Born in Bristol, he started life as a cabinet maker before becoming a self taught artist. He was a member of the Royal West of England Academy and exhibited at Royal Academy and elsewhere.
