Description
This is an exceptional, fine and impressive hallmarked Edward VIII English sterling silver cigarette/cigar box; an addition to the Edwardian silverware collection. This exceptional antique Edward VIII sterling silver cigarette box has a plain rectangular form. The sides of this impressive antique cigarette box are embellished with engine turned decoration to the ends, in addition to broad bands of tooled decoration framing the anterior and postering portions. This exceptional example of antique silverware is fitted with a hallmarked hinged solid silver cover, ornamented with a continuation of tooled and engine turned decoration. The body of this exceptional silver box is fitted with the original cedar wood lining and adjustable dividers. The box is supported by four plain hallmarked bracket style feet. This sterling silver cigarette box retains the original leatherette covering to the underside and bears the retailer's mark 'Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd, 112 Regent St.W'. The cover of the box retains the original gilding to the interior. By virtue of its size this versatile box could be used for a multitude of functions. Note: The majority of such boxes have a wood lining to the cover; it is a sign of quality when boxes have an unlined, solid silver covers. Origin: London, England

This hallmarked silver cigarette box is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The engine turned ornamentation is all very crisp. There is some slight staining to the original cedar wood lining. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the rim, in addition to part hallmarks to the interior of the cover and each foot are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware.
