A superb late 19th century mahogany writing desk by Edwards and Roberts of London. Of excellent construction and with fine attention to detail.
The superstructure with a pair of stationery cupboards flanking a central recess with an open fretwork gallery above. The main desk with a series of 7 drawers and a writing surface fitted with a sumptuous leather. The drawers retain their original solid brass handles and are decorated with blind fretwork carving.
All standing on quadrafoil cluster column legs. With a pair of pull-out slides to the sides. Finished to the rear so could be free-standing within a room if desired.
Sympathetically refinished in our workshops and now offered for sale in excellent condition, with a good colour and patina.
Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialised in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.
