Description
Here is a very rare form antique 19th century cut glass claret jug, the lip formed as a medieval knight's helm with a crown or coronet atop. The glass body of the jug has cut glass diagonal strips on either side as well as flower and swirls cut decoration. The lid, and handle part appear to be casr from pewter, with a silver plated underside to the lid (although quite a lot of the plate has worn away to allow the underlying metal to show through) (see detail in sixth and seventh photographs). The coronet at the top has two small missing pieces to the gallery and a crest (most likley) from its centre. The collar around the neck also shows wear, especially on the right hand side, towards the front, where the filler type medium under the pewter is showing in places (something like plaster of Paris). The jug also has graceful curved handle, almost Art Nouveau in style. It is discreetly marked inside the handle Wmfb -in full Wuerttembergische Metallwaren Fabrik. This is a widely known, highly regarded and much collected manufacturer of the early twentieth century. This is a heavy piece, and seems to be in reasonable condition, apart from the wear on the lid, mentioned in the description. The inside bottom of the glass vessel also has some old clouding from former contents. This may be possible to remove with a vinegar solution, or similar. The item would benefit very much from careful cleaning around where the pewter decoration joins the glass. The jug stands about 8.8 inches (22.5 cm) in height, with a width of about 7.5 inches (19 cm) including the handle. This would be a super item to add to any collection of gothic, medieval or religious themed artefacts.
