An exceptional 18th Century Gothic Chippendale Armchair of large proportions and great colour made from the finest heavy weight, solid Mahogany of the period. The top rail carved with Acanthus leaf and scrolls adjoining the beautifully carved splat shaped with Gothic motifs fitting into the shoe which is hollow moulded and finely carved with gadrooning. The back legs fluted, reeded and delicately carved with beed and reel. The arms are wonderfully shaped finishing with scrolled tips, the uprights are fluted and reeded flowing seamlessly into a scroll to the front edge with a C scroll behind. The legs also having carved fluting from top to bottom.
A real Masterpiece from the pinnacle of the English Chair making tradition, possibly by Wright and Elwick who supplied Furniture to some of the finest houses of the period including Chatsworth and Harewood House. Around four Inches has been added to each foot, the work has been done professionally and is not noticeable.
The chair came from a house near Dumfries and the craftsmanship is of the standard that can be seen in Dumfries House.
A similar example is documented in Herbert Cescinsky''s book (The Gentle Art Of Faking Furniture)
He states that these Chairs are fine in proportion and detail, the carving in these Gothic Chairs is nearly always of high quality, combined with the use of hard and heavy Cuba Mahogany. Chairs of this type are valuable and offer an inducement to the faker.
