Originating from the late 18th century (circa 1780), this table radiates the charm of a country house; its solid top features a raised moulded edge, and the hand-turned baluster-form pedestal, complete with a gun barrel base and centre column shaft, extends to a tripod base with elegantly sweeping cabriole legs ending in pad feet. These classic elements enhance the Georgian elegance of this delightful table.
The table's tilt-top mechanism operates smoothly, allowing for vertical positioning when space is limited. It is versatile enough to function as a lamp table, side table, or even a small dining table between chairs.
The column and base are in excellent sturdy condition, with wear appropriate to its age, contributing to its historical character. Georgian tilt-top tables like this are not only practical but also represent exquisite craftsmanship from a past era, continuing to enchant both antique lovers and interior design enthusiasts.
Tilt Top Tables:-
Tilt-top tables feature a hinged top and a mechanism that allows it to stand vertically to save space and showcase the tabletop. This design offers compact storage options: the folded table can be placed against a wall on two legs or positioned with one leg in a corner.
Tripod tables gained popularity in the 18th century for their balanced proportions, versatility, and contribution to home interiors. Depending on their intended use, from breakfast to tea or occasional tables, the tops varied in shape from oval to round, as did their sizes. The gracefully shaped legs often ended in a pad foot, ball and claw, lion’s pad, or other decorative designs. The column connecting the legs and supporting the top was frequently ornately turned, adding to the table's aesthetic appeal.
Clues regarding age, condition and authenticity:-
Signs of age, condition, and authenticity are often revealed by inspecting the underside of a tabletop, where traces of workmanship may be evident - these are usually acknowledged. Such interventions might represent essential restoration since these items have been in use for two centuries, with varying degrees of wear. If there are no additional screw holes or signs of bearer displacement, it is probable that the top remains original to its base. The existence of a birdcage typically results in indentations at the column tops, and wear marks from the bearers can be observed due to the table's repetitive opening and closing. The most exquisite early Georgian pieces showcased the Birdcage Mechanism, made of two square wooden pieces joined at the corners by turned columns. The lengthy bearers under the tabletop were attached to this frame, permitting the top to pivot smoothly on the stem set into the birdcage, held in place by a wedge. This ingenious design allowed the tabletop to turn independently of the tripod, enabling more flexible and compact storage. When folded, the table could be placed against a wall on two legs or set at an angle with one leg towards a corner to save space.
