Description
Fine quality stationery box in a rare to find condition. Believed to have been made circa 1835, quite possibly up to 20 years earlier. Very attractive decoration comprising of facetted cut steel ‘pins’ and ovals of various dimensions, each and every one very carefully and skilfully positioned. The applied decoration needs to be examined closely to appreciate the multi facetted tops that makes them almost marcasite in appearance. The style of decoration is generally associated with the famous Palais Royal box manufacturers. Contrasting inlaid bands to the lid. Attractive six sided style. Unspoilt patina. Even colour and grain to the satinwood, all original, complete and in excellent condition. No shrinkage splits or uneven light fading. Original hinges and lock. Key for decorative purposes only. Without doubt this box has seen very little in the way of use over the course of circa 200 years. All of the lining is original. All dividers are original and complete including the removable container for pens, pencils, letter opener etc. All of the silk lining to the lid interior is original and remarkably all of the silk edging to the outer panels of the base section are free of any tears and wear. Very rare to find in such condition. Would look splendid on any desk or alongside a telephone for note paper. Scan the web, try finding a better example than this item and certainly it would be difficult to beat on price. Must Be Recommended. Please Note: The escutcheon is Not ivory.
