Description
Please see my stock page for one of the largest selection of jewellery boxes available on this website.
Mid Victorian inlaid rosewood jewellery box in very fine condition. Unspoilt patina. All edges keen. Lid closes square. Inlaid Mother of Pearl and pewter strips (often referred to as ‘white metal’) to the top and front. All veneer and All inlays are original and complete. The box interior is in remarkable condition. Original panel to the lid interior with original swing clasp to the top that when released allows the panel to fold forward to access a ‘love letter’ storage envelope. It must be stated that the material for the side folds is very flimsy. It is true to state that most panels in similar boxes of the style and period are missing, replaced or have been glued back to the lid. It is recommended that the envelope is not used and the panel be regarded as a bonus feature in terms of originality. Original brass ‘stop’ hinges. Original lock with a replacement antique bow ended working key supplied. The base section comprises of the original removable tray with storage space beneath. Please note the inset beaded pewter trim to the top edges of all of the dividers and tray ‘frame’. The fittings within three of the sections are original with the pull tab to the central lid still fully intact and the original knob to the front right section still present and firmly fixed. Obviously this box has been admired rather than used by the many generations of previous owners. Originally made to serve as a work/sewing box almost all boxes of the style are nowadays used to serve as modern day jewellery boxes. The small sections within the tray are perfect for those small items of jeweller with the open section beneath the tray ideal for those larger items.
Scan the web to appreciate the very low percentage of antique boxes of similar style made throughout the 1800’s that have survived with such a high degree of original features in such condition as this example. Must be recommended on that basis alone.
