George III Mahogany & Oak Grandfather Clock by John Beecham of Newcastle
This is a late George III antique mahogany and oak grandfather clock by John Beecham, Newcastle. The clock has a classic hood, with broken pediment, cast brass rondels, and a spherical ball in the centre with a finial above it. The hood has been inlaid with various string, boxwood and mahogany inlays. At the front there are 2 turned columns and in the centre an inlaid glazed door. The face is hand painted with painted shelves in each corner and a moon face on the top painted with the moon, ships and windmills. Beneath the hood there are 3 panels of mahogany which are framed in satinwood. The centre door is oak with an inlaid shell in the centre and the top is double arched. Beneath this is a single panel, 2 quarter columns in mahogany to either side and beneath this section there is a canted corner with moulding running around the front and sides. At the bottom there is a large oak panel with a chamfered fore-edge in mahogany and the clock stands on squat bracket feet. It is an unusual clock and has an interesting combination of oak and mahogany. It will be serviced and running.
