Description
Superb 18th Century (c.1760) antique opaque twist wine goblet that has a large bucket bowl above a double series opaque twist stem consisting of a pair of spiral tapes outside a gauze. It has a large helmet foot.
An outstanding goblet which fits the hand like a glove and can be used for almost anything from a G&T to an Ale.
Date & Origin:-
England, c.1760
Period of George III
Comments:-
Although some slag seeds are detrimental to the perfect looks that many collectors aspire to, we would suggest that a small slag seed or two will be a very welcome sight in the years to come as they won't be present in the many later and modern examples now on the market. In many ways, its a mark of authenticity.
Historical Context:-
Sheep were introduced into the Highlands of Scotland for the first time in 1760. This resulted in what became known as "The Highland Clearances" with the forced eviction of inhabitants of the Highlands and western islands of Scotland...to make way for the more profitable sheep. This also resulted in the destruction of the traditional clan society and began a pattern of rural depopulation and emigration. Over 70,000 inhabitants left Scotland during this period...
