Henry Sanders - A Wonderful Impressionist City Scene - believed to be London but possibly Continental.
Painter Henry Sanders was born Helmuth Saloman, in Dresden, Germany in 1918. After Hitler rose to power he left Germany in 1933 and travelled to Holland and then England, where he studied at Hornsey College of Art from 1935-39, returning to study under Russell Reave and John Moody in 1945. During the Second World War, Sanders was interned as an 'enemy alien' in Canada and drew prodigiously while in the camp. Afterwards, he returned to England, exhibiting at galleries including the Ben Uri, the Obelisk Gallery, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, the Redfern Gallery and Roland Browse & Delbanco and with The London Group. In 1949-51 he served in the Studio Group Committee at the Ben Uri Art Society. As well as a painter of landscapes, figures and animals, he was also a lithographer and lino-cutter. Sanders died in London in 1982, a joint memorial exhibition with Jack Bilbo and Lottie Reizenstein was held at the Ben Uri the following year.
