Subject hunting scene depicting Empress Sisi of Austria she loved riding and hunting and in 1879 to 1880 she made a state visit to Ireland in County Meath to stay with Lord Langford at Summerhill House. This painting shows her dressed in black with a bowler hat walking out & down steps of the large stone side entrance wall of Summerhill house, with tall trees around & she is stroking 1 of the hound dogs & holding her riding whip & being greeted by Lord Langford dressed in his traditional red coat with white trousers & black boots, he has taken his top hat as a gesture of great respect to her. The hunting party has gattered with large group of scent hounds & other riders among Earl Spencer & master of the Hunt Robert Fowler who are also showing courtesy to her. Lady Sisi Bay horse Middleton is ready waiting for her to mount. Lady Sisi later said this was her happiest moment of her life. Biography of the artist Gilbert Scott Wright (24 July 1880 – 1958) was an English painter. Like his older brother George Wright, he painted hunting and coaching scenes, as well as horse portraits. Wright was one of a family of seven children, five of whom were professional artists, either principally as painters, or as illustrators. Wright was born in Leeds on 24 July 1880, and baptised on 29 June 1881. His father was George Edward Wright (24 February 1834 - 11 November 1916), an accountant and Elizabeth Scott (c. 1840 – 31 May 1916), the daughter or Thomas Scott (born c. 1804), variously a railway engineer and a commission agent. George Edward and Elizabeth were married on 22 August 1859 in St' Jude's Church at Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire, England. George Edward Wright and Elizabeth Scott had seven children, five of whom were professional artists, but none of whom has any formal training in art: Like the rest of his family, Wright had no formal training in art. He probably learned to paint from his brother George Wright who was twenty years his senior in producing paintings of sporting and coaching scenes for calendars and other work. They collaborated until about 1925. In his early teens Wright fell under the influence of Samuel Edmund Waller, and at the age of 13 began to produce paintings of handsome Georgian gallants, many on horseback, either courting or eloping with their lady loves. In 1900 he exhibited How he won the Vc7 at the Royal Academy. The painting was soon purchased by a print publisher, and this led to many commissions. Wright produced illustrations for a number of publications including a two-page spread of a Lion in the Path for The Graphic in 1910 a two-page colour hunting illustration for the Illustrated London News in 1913, a colour illustration for The Bystander in 1930. He also produced prints for sale. Wright produced postcards for James Henderson, for whom Wright painted horses heads, M. Munk and Tuck, for whom Wright painted a whole series of sets of cards. His works can command are similar to those of his brother George. Record auction prices include: London, 27 September 1989, Stage for the London to Exeter Coach 19,800 Gbp. Biography of Elisabeth (born Duchess Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie in Bavaria; 24 December 1837 – 10 September 1898), nicknamed Sisi or Sissi, was Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary from her marriage to Franz Joseph I of Austria on 24 April 1854 until her assassination in 1898. Elisabeth was born into the Ducal royal branch of the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach but enjoyed an informal upbringing before marrying her first cousin, Emperor Franz Joseph I, at 16. The marriage thrust her into the much more formal Habsburg court life, for which she was unprepared and which she found suffocating. The couple had four children: Sophie, Gisela, Rudolf, and Marie Valerie. Early in her marriage, Elisabeth was at odds with her aunt and mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie, who took over the rearing of Elisabeth's children. The birth of Crown Prince Rudolf improved Elisabeth's standing at court, but her health suffered under the strain. As a result, she would often visit Hungary for its more relaxed environment. She came to develop a deep kinship with Hungary and helped to bring about the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary in 1867. The death of Elisabeth's son Rudolf and his mistress Mary Vetsera in a murder–suicide at his hunting lodge at Mayerling in 1889 was a blow from which the Empress never fully recovered. She withdrew from court duties and travelled widely, unaccompanied by her family. In 1890, she had the palace Achilleion built on the Greek island of Corfu. The palace featured an elaborate mythological motif and served as a refuge, which Elisabeth visited often. She was obsessively concerned with maintaining her youthful figure and beauty, developing a restrictive diet and wearing extremely tightlaced corsets to keep her waist looking very small. While travelling in Geneva in 1898, Elisabeth was fatally stabbed in the heart by an Italian anarchist named Luigi Lucheni. Her tenure of 44 years was the longest of any Austrian empress. Summerhill House was a 100-roomed Palladian house in County Meath, Ireland which was the ancestral seat of the Viscounts Langford and the Barons Langford. Built in 1731, it was likely designed by Sir Edward Lovett Pearce and completed by Richard Cassels in the Palladian style, although Sir John Vanbrugh, who was related to Pearce and with whom he trained, is thought to have also influenced the design of the house, which could be seen by the Baroque details, great arched chimney stacks and the palatial grandeur and scale. The house demonstrated the power and wealth the Langford Rowley family had at the time. They owned vast amounts of land in counties Meath, Westmeath, Cork, Londonderry, Antrim, and Dublin as well as in Devon and Cornwall in England. The house also welcomed royalty, and ranked architecturally amongst the finest and most modern mansions in Europe. Desmond FitzGerald, 29th Knight of Glin and president of the Irish Georgian Society described its loss as "probably the greatest tragedy in the history of Irish domestic architecture.
