Description
We have for sale a lovely painting by the well-respected Victorian artist James Burrell Smith (otherwise known as Waterfall Smith) 1822-1897.
This very attractive watercolour painting depicts Cumbrian cottages and outbuildings against a backdrop of mountains under brooding skies. The painting is signed in pencil J B Smith 1867 to the bottom left underneath the title, again in pencil “In Deepdale Westmoreland. The painting is presented in a gilt picture frame under anti-reflective glass. Hand written notes on the back of the picture indicate that the painting was first framed framed in 1958, then re-framed in 1979 under anti reflective glass and then re-mounted on the 6 October 2017. The text on the back indicates that the painting is dated 1857, but I believe the slightly unclear date under the signature is actually 1867.
The painting and frame together is 20.8 inches (53cm wide), 17.5 inches (44.5cm) high including the frame and is in a good to very good condition other than one or two very small age-related blemishes.
