Description
A rare cup and saucer from King Edward VII’s Royal Yacht Hmy Victoria and Albert III. Made by Copeland Spode in the early 20th century, c1900.Decorated in blue and gold on white, the cup and saucer have “The Royal Yacht” inscription on the royal garter with a crown above. Height of cup: 7.3cm (2.9in) Diameter of saucer: 16.2cm (6.4in) Marks: “Spode Copelands China England” printed in green, “W.T.Copeland & Sons Stoke on Trent England” printed in blue, “8120” painted in red. Other painted marks (see images). The saucer also has an illegible impressed date code. Condition: Very good. There is a tiny indentation in the rim of the cup that has been gilded over - possibly a retouched “fleabite” (see images). No other issues. Minimal wear. Very light crazing to the underside of the cup visible under magnification. Note: The third of the Victoria and Albert royal yachts was launched in 1899 and decommissioned in 1939. She made sixty passages between her commissioning in 1901 and 1914. She was built for Queen Victoria, who never got to sail in her. The service to which this cup and saucer belonged is known as the “Garter Service” and would have been used for official state occasions.
