Description
This is a rare dinner plate from King Edward VII’s Royal Yacht Hmy Victoria and Albert III. Made by Copeland in the early 20th century, c1900. Decorated in blue and gold on white, the plate has “The Royal Yacht” inscription on the royal garter with a crown above.
Marks: “W T Copeland & Sons Stoke on Trent ” printed in brown. Impressed “Copeland” over a crown. Impressed “U” over a number (first digit illegible, could be 2,3,8, or 9. 2nd digit “4”. Impressed number “24”
Note:-
The third of the Victoria and Albert royal yachts was launched in 1899 and decommissioned in 1939. She made sixty passages between her commissioning in 1901 and 1914. She was built for Queen Victoria, who never got to sail in her. The service to which this plate belonged is known as the “Garter Service” and would have been used for official state occasions.
