Description
A very good large sized late Victorian aneroid wall barometer by Short & Mason retailed by Robinson & Co, Shrewsbury, c1900. Large wall barometer having 10” porcelain transfer and hand-decorated dial, the outer part with standard meteorological red highlighted terms, the barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 26 – 21, divided to 1/20th”, the inner part with various prognostications, marked “Robinson & Co, The Square, Shrewsbury.” Bold blued steel stylised pointer, complimentary bright brass index with adjustment knob, all set beneath a heavy bevelled glass set in a lacquered pressed bezel. Conventional good quality movement driven from a 2⅞” single capsule tensioned on a C spring. The whole mounted within a solid oak case with rope twist design to extremity. The verso with original hanging plate, calibration port. Comments: Always popular, these are impressive  instruments being about twice the size of those usually encountered. The dials are most attractive and fit well into more or less any living space particularly country house kitchens! Collectable in this condition. Robinson & Co was a long-established silversmith based in The Square in Shrewsbury, and in London.
